The Team in Wilpena Pound. Cousin Declan & Trish
Only a short trip today approx 170klm to Elliston, it is a small coastal town on the west coast of Eyre Peninsula. The township is located on Waterloo Bay. It has a rainfall of 426 mm per annum. Elliston has a population of 377.
Coffin Bay
Some beautiful coastal drives on dirt roads, hard base so pretty smooth for caravans to negotiate. One in particular was the Sculpture Coastal Drive, well worth the drive for the beautiful wild SA Coast. We visited Coffin Bay, named after a friend of Matthew Flinders , Isaac Coffin a fellow naval officer who was prominent in his circumnavigation of Australia.
Elliston Coastline
I thought it may have been named due to the number of shark fatalities along this coast. As the Divinyls sang, “There is a fine line between pleasure and pain.” The delights of the idealistic pristine coastal beaches, empty and the lurking dangers of Great White Sharks. The actual footage of real sharks in the film Jaws in the 70’s was filmed off this coastline, due to the guarantee that Great White’s were present.
Walker Rock Free Camp Local Blue Tongue
Arrived at “Free Camp” 10 klm north of Elliston. A fantastic beachside site, 50mtr from the van, a quick swim, empty beaches, stunning sunset. A dozen vans tonight, beautiful feed and a lovely night around a fire. This was another opportunity to view the incredible night sky of the Australian Outback,. Wow! great to see it again after many years of city living, it is such a spectacular sight, before the moon rises.
Jim from Portland USA sent me a message saying Australia has 10,625 beaches and if you visited one a day it would take you over 29 years to visit them all. Hope these two are to your liking Jim, how many years left Jim? I will still be on the road when you, Peter & partners visit next time, so come & join us.
