After a pleasant stay at the Goondiwindi race track, we head south crossing the Macintyre River into NSW. We follow the Bruxner Hwy, via, Boggabilla, Yetman, Texas, Bonshaw, fill up with fuel and onto our final destination for the day, Tenterfield. A warm day, passing through winding valleys and rolling hills.
Bonshaw is a small village servicing the needs of the agricultural sector in the area. A small population of around 130 people.
Home for a few days Surrounding Parklands
Arrive in Tenterfield mid afternoon, the temperature is noticeably cooler, but it is 850 mtr above sea level. Rain is threatening, so we set up camp near the showgrounds. It is quite sometime since I have visited Tenterfield. A pop. of 4000, but the history of the town, the beauty of the Northern Tablelands, and surrounding landscape is beautiful.
Mt Mackenzie is a short drive from the town, at 1258 mtr is one of the highest points in the region, with wonderful views.Donaldson, was the first premier of NSW and had large holdings in the area, (100k acres). The family home, Tenterfield House, in Haddington Scotland, provided the name as we know today.
During WWII, the town was earmarked as a key battleground if the Japanese should invade. Tank traps and gun emplacements can still be seen today on roads around the New England Hwy.
Bald Hill National Park, a granite rock almost 1300mtrs, is a easy but steep climb for most people, and well worth a visit. It also has an easier gradient through the surrounding bushland. It is the largest granite monolith in Australia. Views of the Queensland mountains and NSW are clearly seen.
Cattle and wool are the main industries up here. The Tenterfield Railway Station, is now a museum, was the main north railway line.
Subtropical climate, with mild winters and warm wet summers.
George Woolnough who lived on Manners, worked here for 53 years. (Saddlery)

Pretty town, with rich history, period buildings, and parks. F-III site memorial is close to the town, for those interested in military history. Two pilots lost their lives in 1987.
